In 2008, the Government of Canada announced an investment of $13 million over three years to help seniors and others recognize the signs and symptoms of elder abuse and to provide information about support that is available. The Federal Elder Abuse Initiative includes a national awareness campaign, as well as measures by a number of federal departments and agencies whose programs and activities reach out to seniors or those who work with them.

As part of this initiative, a special one time funding opportunity is available to enable professional associations, whose members work closely with seniors, to raise their awareness and understanding about elder abuse. Specifically, national and Quebec professional associations may apply for this project funding through the New Horizons for Seniors Program's Elder Abuse Awareness funding stream.

This Call for Proposals is open from June 15, 2009 until July 24, 2009 and eligible organizations are invited to submit proposals. The Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Program helps to ensure that seniors are able to benefit from and contribute to the quality of life in their community.
